7 Skin Care Mistakes and How to Correct Them

Good skin care is a practice that should continue for a lifetime. If you care for your skin the proper way, you may be able to avoid issues later on. You should nourish your skin from the inside and practice daily habits that will help you achieve healthy, problem-free skin. To help you stay on the right track, avoid the following skin care mistakes.

1. Lack of Sunscreen 

You might find it easy to forget to apply sunscreen before going out, especially if you are in a hurry. However, you should make it a daily habit. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays damage the skin. Not only can exposure to the sun lead to wrinkles, age spots, and premature aging, it also increases the risk of skin cancer.
For adequate protection, choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. If you tend to sunburn easily, you might want to go with a higher level of protection. Apply the sunscreen about 20 minutes before going outside. Reapply the lotion or cream after bathing, swimming, or perspiring.

2. Unapproved Cosmetics

If you use cosmetics blindly without bothering to check the labels, you could be setting yourself up for skin problems, such as clogged pores or irritation. You should check the ingredients of your makeup and cosmetic products. This habit is even more important if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
Choose makeup, skin cleansers, and moisturizers that are dermatologist-tested and approved. Also, look for products that are labeled as hypoallergenic. These are less likely to irritate your skin or cause breakouts. 

3. Chlorine Exposure

When you swim in chlorinated water, the chemical will cling to your skin. Chlorine can damage your skin by promoting premature aging if you are not careful about thoroughly washing off the residue. Studies have also shown that swimming in chlorinated water may heighten the risk of skin cancer.
Reduce the risk of skin damage by showering or bathing after swimming.

4. Dehydration

You probably know that proper hydration is essential for one's good health. Not drinking enough water can also be detrimental to your skin.
If you have dry, flaky and dull looking skin, you probably should increase your water intake. Aim for eight glasses of water per day. You may notice a difference in your skin once you begin to rehydrate yourself. Another way to keep your skin from drying out is to use a humidifier in your home.

5. Sleep Deprivation

If you're sleep-deprived, your body will feel it, and your skin may begin to show it as well. During a rejuvenating sleep, the body repairs cells, including damaged skin cells. Lack of sleep may speed up the aging process as well.
In addition, lack of sleep may increase the release of stress hormones. Stress hormones may aggravate existing skin issues such as acne or psoriasis.

6. Hot Water

A long, hot shower may feel relaxing after a tiring day, but it may be detrimental to your skin. Repeatedly bathing in hot water tends to dry the skin. You may notice your skin feels flaky or itchy. Avoid the problem by keeping your bathwater lukewarm rather than steaming hot.

7. Unclean Makeup Brushes 

You probably recognize the importance of keeping your makeup brushes clean. If you use dirty brushes, you risk a buildup of dirt and germs which may clog your pores, leading to breakups, or infect your skin.
Even if you clean your makeup brushes regularly, you might still be guilty of another mistake. Failure to air out your brushes after cleaning them may allow bacteria to grow on them. Don't forget to let the brushes air dry after cleaning them.
As part of your healthy skin care regimen, visit your dermatologist regularly. He or she can check for skin moles and other potential issues before it may become serious.
